You start small 

with a huge projection 

and begin to find people 

to fill in this space 

and they come 

and you keep going 

meeting new faces 

bringing them in 

and then they start connecting 

and bringing in their people 

and suddenly 

you have created something 

much bigger 

than you would have thought 


Wystawa dokumentuje działania i trwające projekty wokół „iA – Instytutu Artycypacji” – miejsca spotkań osób z różnych krajów, środowisk i dziedzin, gdzie myśli, dusze, ekspresje, dźwięki i obrazy zderzają się ze sobą, współtworząc ulotne działania i doświadczenia. Instytut Artycypacji – iA koncentruje się na promowaniu budowania społeczności, samoorganizacji, artystycznej i społecznej mobilizacji, spędzania czasu w słońcu i chodzenia boso po trawie. Jednocześnie narzędzia i praktyki artystyczne są dzielone we wszystkich codziennych działaniach i dyskursie. 

Po 10 dniach letniego spotkania instytutów w odległym Jankowie Pomorskim, wyłoniło się kilka grup roboczych, kontynuujących współpracę w szerokim zakresie praktyk, od książek kucharskich po media audiowizualne, od kawiarni po występy publiczne i interwencje plakatowe, od domków z bajki po propozycje architektoniczne i wiele innych. Celem iA, mającym swoje korzenie w historycznym miejscu Spichlerza Gropiusa oraz w duchu i filozofii warszawskiego Bauhausu, jest łączenie, wzmacnianie i rzucanie wyzwań globalnej sieci poprzez realia panujące w wiejskiej wiosce.

“My mother asked me, what I am actually doing, returning to this place in Poland for the 5th time, and what my role at this project: iA-institute of Articipation is. I am not completely sure, I could say, but that’s a bad answer. Although to not be so very sure about what I do, and what is to be done, is a key to what happens here.

On an open field, without any urban infrastructure, the usual logics and structure of the spectacle are on loose ground and tend to fall apart. The expense of direct labour needed for spectacular things to happen here bear the question: what for? 

The idea that art does not exist without a spectator has lead many to the conclusion of creating something for spectators, and of course, the more spectacular, the more spectators. I disagree and would like to turn the expectation inward: to be my own spectator, observer and for my artistic practice to be a tool of understanding, maybe even itself. So first of all, I believe should come: self sufficiency . 

The field at Gropius Granary is a pretty good training ground for this. Even symbolically, to do something next to the first architectural attempts of a later Icon is a perfect setting for the liberating rule “No masterpiecing”. 

But also: Yes, we are alone, but we are not alone. Apart from a training ground in autonomy, at the institute of Articipation we are working on a social structure with many loose ends. With trust in the fact that connection comes through openness and hope for making the ends meet with fusing sparks. 

So why do I return? I meet fantastic people and artists, I challenge my own ideas, I can participate in others’ practice and thoughts. The time around iA – the institute of Articipation, Gropius Granary, Warsaw Bauhaus is a catalyst for beautiful and strange things to happen.” – David Luis Grimm
